Waiting for Treatment
Our top priority is to provide you with safe and compassionate care and to get you the care you need as quickly as possible. How long you spend in the emergency department depends on a number of factors:
- The number of seriously ill patients that are being seen in the department while you are there, including those arriving by ambulance.
- The number of tests you might need (for example bloodwork, x-rays, or a CT scan).
- Whether a consultation with a specialist is requested by your emergency doctor.
- Whether you are admitted to hospital as an inpatient.
All these activities take time and will affect your length of stay. However, while you are in our hospital your condition is being monitored.
It helps to be prepared...
- Ask your doctor’s office about back-up coverage, after-hours clinics or on-call service.
- Update all emergency telephone numbers and post them in a visible place.
- Keep first aid supplies handy.
- Make sure everyone in your family has enough of their prescription and non-prescription medications, needles, alcohol swabs, etc.
- Know where the nearest 24-hour pharmacy is located.
- Ensure your house number is well lit after dark.
- Remind visiting family members to bring their Ontario Health Card or their health insurance information.
